    Default Rod Holder Question

I’ve been longlining and I’m not happy with the rod holders on the back of my boat. I put the reel behind the front forks so a hang-up doesn’t pull the rod out. My issue is the rods are hard to remove when you have a fish on. The opening is on the left side which is ok but it seems the gap between the front “U” and the back part that the handle rests against doesn’t have enough gap. I’m sorry if this doesn’t make sense to you guys but I don’t know how to describe it any better. I’ve tried to mark up a photo to help show what I’m talking about. My question is, what do you guys use for holders in this situation?

    Thanks for your help!

Spider locks will solve that problem.

put your reei on the outside of the fork and they work fine at least mine do. I also have spyder loc's and like them better. I use the ones like your's on my pontoon.

    1. Put a section of pool noodle around the rod that it floats if it goes over board

    2. Figure out a way to tilt rod up a bit so it won't pull out.

    3. Invest in new rod holders.. many good choices... I use Spyder lock also.

Just the rear part of the handle goes in the rod holder...the reel is supposed to be in front of the fork.

I know how they are supposed to go but I usually put the reel behind the fork when longlining out thw back of the boat. If not a hang will pull the rod out the back.

It shouldn't if you had adjustable rod holders and would elevate the rods some when pulling straight out the back of the boat.

I’ve always pointed the rod tips up about 10 degrees and left the drags loose never had a problem loosing rods with just the butt of the rod in the holder.

You guys are making a mountain out of a molehill. I put the reel behind the fork to prevent loss in a hangup. (Lost 2 before I got smart)
Lifting the rod out when you have a bite is easy. Theses aren't 50# Tuna. Simply grasp the rod in front of the fork with your right hand and rotate up and back. Once clear place your reel hand in the handle and start reeling. 2 second easy transition and no launched rods.
