I've been using this method for about 25 years. Works great and no special tools needed.

I do mine like the Grisby video also. I have a bolt with 2 large washers and a light compression spring. I place the spool on the bolt with a washer on each side, then use a wing nut to compress the spring on the spool to creat tension.
I then put the bolt in my shop vice and fill the reel. Like others stated, I only run the line through the first guide on the rod. If it's a 2 piece, I'll take the top piece off for ease of handling.

I'm old school bass fisherman. Baitcasters, back then trilene and stren , we spooled 14-16-20 test , with plastic new line spool in water floating, but I guess that's old school. And doesn't work with 4-5-6. ?
