800 English long bowmen vs 4000 French knights should not have been much of a contest but the English commander chose a swampy horseshoe shaped opening on the edge of the forest, with his archers on a crest at its back. the French King despite repeated warnings chose to directly assault the English, willing to brush off the expected heavy initial casualties. just before the battle it rained very heavily turning the site into a quagmire. the brave but foolish French knights were literally stuck in the mud just below their opponents and over 3500 of Frances finest were uselessly slaughtered. many knights were captured after sinking up to their waists in the mud and becoming trapped in their own armor...
