Red Breasted Sunfish ... very nice. I don't see many of them in the waters I fish, but we do have one that I think is a very pretty fish - the Longear Sunfish (or what my late Grampa called a "red belly"):

CrappiePappy, if we have those here, I've never caught one. Sure is a pretty fish. Folks here call these Red Bellies too. They don't get very big but they are incredibly good table fare.

Definitely "eye-candy".
Pass the "Sportsman Baton" on before you're gone, promote values for others to hunt and fish upon.
Nickajack is full of them.....fight more like a shell cracker.

Crappiepappy , we have a new water reservoir that opened to the public about 4or5 years ago . When it first opened I caught those “ red bellies” on a consistent basis , around the docks and boat ramp . I released everyone I had the pleasure of catching .
Now , it’s rare to catch anything there unless I venture out in my jonboat . What little area that’s accessible from shore is fished to death . Gillchaser
Also one-of my favorites. Firstly and aggressive they like to try and take your rod out of your hands.

According to this, you do have them : https://outdooralabama.com/bream/longear-sunfish
When my Grandparents and I fished for them, it was almost always in late Summer & on deep rock points. That was back in the day when we'd go cut "Horseweed worms" (stalk borer grubs) out of the Giant Ragweed plants that grew along the country road fence rows of the farms that were on the way to the lake.
Best have long sleeved shirts on (even in the August heat), with plenty of bug repellent sprayed on (head to toe) .... or else the Chiggars would eat you alive. Had to do a quick check for Ticks, as well.
