By accident on his way to the cooler to get another beer, a friend kicked the side of the bucket as he walked behind it, and the vibrations made the rod tip look like the other guy had a bite. We all pointed at the rod tip and called his name ( he was busy talking & not paying attention), so he jumped up, scrambled to the bucket, and violently snatched the rod back, like he was setting to hook on a monster fish. Of course there was no fish, but now it was a game. Every time he'd start talking, somebody else would kick the bucket and make his rod tip bounce. Of course, motormouth would scramble over to his rod and snatch it back, like he was expecting a 50 pound catfish on the other end. Only there was no fish.
He walked away from his gear to answer nature's call, and another one of the guys tied a 16 ounce glass coke bottle to his line & tossed it out into the river. Once motormouth got back to the group, somebody bumped his bucket again, but this time when he set the hook, the rod started bucking and pulling back. I don't know if you've ever tied a glass bottle to a line and tried to reel it back through a current, but it pulls like a real catfish. Motormouth eased down to the water's edge with his giant landing net. We all fell out laughing when he reeled up that bottle.
