I use a small swivel from the braid to a 24 inch piece of mono or floro, then attach a snap.

i use snaps, and I take the split ring off. I did it to make it easier to change / use the snap swivel, with 68 year old eyes, and fingers, it was just easier. I'm still learning how to catch crappie by trolling, so I don't catch high numbers, but the connection is not the reason.

If the crank comes with a split ring I leave it on and attach via a snap. On some cranks it is much easier to attach the snap to the split ring rather than the crank bait itself. I find no performance issue either way.
