Facebook article/pic says it was weighed on a guide's hand held scale & weighed 4lb 10oz (per scale reading). It's on the Coosa River Crappie Club's Facebook page, but doesn't elaborate beyond that. Maybe the story/details will come up on here, in the Ala state forum : http://www.crappie.com/crappie/coosa...-crappie-club/

I may be wrong, but from that picture it almost looks more like a Hybrid Crappie, than a true Black Crappie. It's kinda hard to count the dorsal spines, but I count 6 ... and that would be consistent with it being a Hybrid Cross. Doesn't take away anything from the size/weight, or it possibly being a state record (even though Ala distinguishes between Black & White Crappie records). Kentucky's State Record Crappie is a Hybrid, weighing 4lb 14oz, but KY does not distinguish between the species.

The Ky State Record Crappie (pictured below) was first thought to be a possible World Record Black Crappie until testing proved it to be a Hybrid ... and you can see some similarities in the markings between the two :

I cannot imagine bringing that to the surface and realized it was not a pickle. I may not have a heart attack but it would be a very anxious time until I got it in the boat. Great fish!
