My home generator battery exploded! No idea why.

They will do that some times.....older batterys especially....the scale falls of the plates and builds up on the bottom and eventually will connect a couple of the plates together and short it out.
I have spent most my life fishing........the rest I wasted.

Battery was supposed to be a 60 month battery. It was 50 months old when it exploded.

overcharging could be the root cause.
The issue is that if a battery isn’t properly maintained, and the electrolyte level is allowed to drop, the lead plates will be exposed to oxygen and may warp. This can lead to the plates flexing and touching during the extreme current drain initiated whenever you crank the starter motor, which can result in a spark inside the battery. That, in turn, can ignite any hydrogen present in the cell, causing the battery to explode.
Some say the most common cause of battery explosions upon start-up is dirty battery posts and cables. The dirt prevents a good connection and allows electrical arcing. So it is a good idea to inspect and clean battery posts regularly.
