Yard work works best for me.
Same as I fish normally clear , stained , or other waters . Bigger baits , tight to cover , and dark or bright colors . Hard to beat dark (Purple , Black ) with bright colors (Orange , Chartreuse ) combination of both works great , my go to bait is Purple / Chartreuse . In real muddy water big tubes( 2.5'' ) in Orange/ Chartreuse have worked well for me .

We all know crappie are visual feeders but don't discount their ability to "sense" your bait. The lateral line will help a crappie locate your bait when the water is muddy. Baits that have a larger profile and create vibrations can pay off. When the water is off color from normal, presentation trumps color in my opinion, you gotta get your bait in their face. I also expect to catch less. That said, having a color they can see when the bait is in their face helps.
Had good luck in muddy waters this year so far with a roadrunner jighead and a matrix mini "blue horizon" check them out here. Check there video out also.
