The best way I can describe a rubber snubber ...it's like a bungee cord that goes on your line it stretches to take the shock of the line and help not to rip bait out of fish mouth

I rarely use anything on my crankbait pulling lines except a snap swivel. I weight my dropper lines and push lines. 95% of my crankbait trolling is pulling.
I think floatntiny is on the right track. I took my wife out yesterday afternoon. We trolled some flats and drops and would go for a while and soundly hook all the crappie and get them in the boat then hit a streak where we would lose several. My wife lost 5 fish in a row within 20 feet of the boat that were on top. It was nothing she was doing different than before or after, they just came off the hook. We lost some small fish and some really good fish. We didn't discriminate. Ended up with 14 good keepers, best quality fish we've had in a while.

Slower action rod (ie softer) sometimes can help when they are just barely get the hooks in the lips.
I think it's just how active and aggressive they are. I don't troll cranks but I long line jigs and some days if you don't set the hook a little more aggressive you lose more fish.
