I have about 15 or 20 poles. I long line 100% of the time,
and all poles are equipped with spinning reels of all different
makes and models. All are open bails.
My experience long lining is that it's the line, lure, and the
speed that catches fish.

Take it from a old Farm House brat, I have used all reels and in the end the low profile bait casters are the way to go. You don't need the high dollar ones, mid range $30/40 reels are fine. E-bay has plenty, name brands.

I have at least 8 Shakespeare Axiom B/C reels and they do a great job. I find em on Ebay for cheap.

Expensive long line reels is silly! How good of a drag do you really need to reel in a 2 lb crappie! They aren't redfish or stripers! Buy some el cheapos. I get some from Walmart for $16. Use them longlining and rigging. They are blue and have 6 bearings. They have one great advantage that other reels dont. The handles fold down and out of the way. GREAT for loading on a rod rack. They don't get tangled up with each other. I've caught cats and stripers on them with no problem.
Fishing is like pizza.......Even when it's not that good, it's still pretty good!

I'll second the Shimano IX series reels. I've got about 10 of these I've had for a looong time. Cheap and gets the job done. But, I've always been a quick fire man.

Depends on your pocket book and how much you spend in general on reels. I for example have always spent more than needed for sure, but I also use these reels for bass if I go after them or possible even catfish some time. I use Shimano reels and usually the higher end type. I have a good many of the Stradic reels that I have had since some time in the 1990's and still great! I have a good many Sustains, but they seem to be getting even into my nose bleed territory. Since I just had my Birthday I am going to get another reel and am looking hard again at the Stradic, but now they have more than one model of Stradic and I am a bit lost now, but will find out and then buy one. Really am looking at the Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 1000FA Spinning Reel. Probably will get one to see how they are. Have had some say the reels are not made as well as the older ones were, but I don't really know about that witht he high end reels, but my old ones are sure still doing great!

I agree, you do not need to break the bank with a reel for crappie fishing. However....it ultimately depends on your pocketbook. Personally I "enjoy" fishing with a decent reel; one with a good drag and some smooth retrieving ball bearings. Being a "tight-wad" myself, I've found the best compromise out there is the Pflueger President. A very fine, quality reel, at a very reasonable cost of <$50.00. JMO.
