First they mostly are made in India or some place like that and have no ceramic inserts usually. So it only take a very small bur to give you fits. I actually like both the kind with inserts and full tube ceramic is even better. Renzetti makes some with a Ruby tip and they are pretty nice too.

There are a lot of brands that do a good job like Griffin, Dr. Slick makes very good tools and not all that high cost so try one of them and just make sure to get the ones with a ceramic insert. I have some that even the insert came out of and I just glued them back in an do fine, but most of the good names hold up well.

Cleanup tip I've found.... A pet hair roller works great for all those loose pieces of feathers and fuzz left over when you tie. I'm talking about the kind that looks like masking tape on a handle. Just peel off the top layer of tape and zip it over the flat area of your work surface and you're done. Works great on your clothes too.

I posted this on another forum but it should be helpful to any new to tying.

The initial cash outlay for tying tools can get expensive. Here are a few home build and substitute tools that will save some money and keep your costs down.

From left to right: Whip Finisher, Half Hitchers,Bodkins, Flux Brush, Hackle Pliers, Nails and a Bobbin Threader.

1. The whip finisher is made from .035 SS wire.
2. The half hitchers are from ball point pens.
3.The bodkins are from SS wire .o25 to .045,
4.The flux brush is trimmed short and used to clean out powder paint from jig hook eyed and tease hair bodies.
5. The hackle pliers is a EZE ball use on test leads.
6.The nails along with the bodkins are use for painting on eyes.
7.The bobbins threader is made from .010 SS wire.

Thanks to Skip. I have used ceramics the last five years. They are so much better. I urge new tiers to just go on Nd get them and avoid all the hassle of cheaper models.

Hello my name is Josh and I've been tying jigs for about
Two years now...I've just recently decided to start to sale
My jigs to local bait shops...question.... what would be a fair
Price to sale my jigs? There would be five in each pack
Staple to my business card..I know the store owner has to
Make his money...50 cents a jig is what I was thinking.
