Default Buggs Report for 3-20 to 23

Fished Buggs again last weekend. Caught some good fish on Friday and Sunday but just not many. Fished a diffrent area on Saturday, Grassy Creek, and caught over 50 small 6" to 8" crappie, not what I'm looking for. Did best in Eastland. Most fish caught tightlining in 6 to 8 foot of water on jigs and minnows fished about 5' deep moving real slow. Had to leave early on Sunday afternoon but some fish had moved up shallower to around 3 to 4'. Water temp on Sunday started at 50 and moved up to 54 after lunch. Managed to catch only 9 keepers in Grassy, lots of throwbacks. All fish in Eastland were 11- 1/2" plus. Had 1 at 14-1/2" weigh was 1lb 12oz, another at 1lb, 10oz, several more at 1 1/2lbs. Total of 8 fish over a pound. Hoping this upcoming weekend would continue to move the fish in but the weather does not look promising. Kept only 19 fish, all but 3 were females. Lets home the weatherman is wrong again. Here is a picture of my 2 biggest fish.

Congrats Roy! It sounds like you had a good weekend. I hope that we don't get the weather that they are calling for... but if we could fish the bash in the rain, we can fish next weekend in the rain as well!!! :D:D:D

Default Eastland Creek and Carl Herring

Eastland Creek is my favorite place to fish. Been fishing it since the mid 80's. The boat ramp is located near the town of Boyton, near Northbend campground and ramp. It does not seem to have the number of fish it used to have but everything I catch in there is usually good size. Not sure what has happened to the fish. You to catch all sizes and good numbers, now most days are 10 to 12 crappie but all nice. Still lots of bait in the coves and plenty of fish eating birds. I go to diffrent creeks some time to see if I'm missing something. Catch plenty of smaller fish elsewhere but not the size. Also not too many crappie fish there anymore so you can have large areas to yourself which I prefer.

I meet Carl Herring and his brother in Eastland in the mid 80's. He is a true gentleman who will share what he knows. Meet him with his small wooden boat several times at the ramp as well as on the water. He always took the time to talk to you and try to help you out. It always gave my confidence a boost when I would be fishing in the same area as him. He was one of if not the first person to start fishing the long poles for crappie. To watch him work a 20' pole with a crappie on the end was like watching a great artist. To me he is still the best late winter to early crappie fisherman I have ever seen. Fished with Butch Auther a few times and will have to give him the nod for year round best fisherman. Haven't seen Carl in a few years though I did see his name in the paper a couple of weeks back where he caught a nice ring perch. Now lives on Diasound? Reservior near Williamsburg the last I heard. A true legend.
Hope to be back down this weekend if if looks like the rain won't be too heavy.
    Tight lines,
    Roy

Roy good report and great picture. Good to hear what you had to say about Carl. Never met him but most everyone who has and do know him say the same thing as you. I'm very glad to here about your catch in Eastland and do hope to try it myself in the next few weeks. Way to good.
