Walkers Dam is off-limits after a significant breach was found in the structure of the dam earlier this week.
"We know it's a significant problem, but we don't know how significant the repairs are going to have to be," said Karen Levy of Newport News Waterworks.
Levy describes it as a breach, and says that, somehow, the dam is failing. Workers picked up on the trouble Monday when they realized there was an almost even level of water on both sides. Normally, it would be higher upstream than it is downstream.
"You could see a pattern of the water that is not usual around the dam, and there was some piling that was disturbed," said Levy.
Engineers won’t even guess what caused the damage at this point.
Outdoorsmen have been sidelined to the shoreline where the herring are less plentiful. They are unable to use the catwalk and unable to secure boats to the dam as they typically would.
Forrest Seay says one needs to be closer to the deeper water to catch herring, but the new restrictions make that difficult.
"That's even worse, if you can't tie up to the locks, I mean, I guess if they think the dam's going to give away, I mean, even if you're in a boat out there, I guess you'd be in jeopardy," said Seay.
Divers will head into the lake Thursday to see how extensive the damage is. Waterworks says its customers will see no impact to service.
