Wednesday was an amazing day at LCR! Given where we are on the spawning calendar, I expected the day to be no better than "fair." Large spawners have been in the backs of coves for weeks & I really expected to find nothing but dinks and mediums at this late date.
My first spot of the day quickly dispelled the notion that the slabs were spawned and gone. Spawned, yes. Gone, no! Maybe their turn is over for the spawning beds, but they were still in the 10' to 15' water nearest the shallows. Ten minutes after setting up on this spot - BANG - a 14-incher!
The next cove added a couple of keepers plus lots of dinks. The 1/8 oz "FishDoc Special" claimed a few, but most fish wanted minnows. Shallower settings worked here & there, but most of the day I dropped minnows to depths of 10' to 12' in order to find the bite. After playing with the dinks and assorted "other" species, I moved on the spot #3.
This spot delivered at a rate that was much slower than recent trips, but it did give up a few nice fish. A 50-yard location adjustment (still in the back of the cove) put me on a larger group of fish. The bite picked up, and then - BANG - a 16-incher!! This was only my 3rd 16"+ fish in 36 months of fishing.
After plenty of time at spot #3, I moved on the the final spot of the day. Like the previous spot, one section held lots of dinks and another yielded slabs. Soon after leaving the side with the dinks - BANG - another 14-incher!
My day ended early (only about 8 hrs of fishing time), but was one of the best days in years. The total fish count stood at 85, but there were times when I missed a few. Keepers numbered about 37, but all the big girls and boys were released so they could grow up. This group of 25 got a free trip to Chesterfield Co.

Any time you want to roll that chopper this way, I'd be proud to have you in the back seat, Bill. LCR's the place. Crappie fishing's been very good this spring, the 'crackers should be hot next week, and Doodlum's looking for the rock bite to pick up any day. Every two or three trips a citation ringer jumps into the boat, and if you're bored with all of that, the pike and greenies are usually in the mood!

Bill you need to talk with Corker about the "New Kent billfish" trips. That should be wild and different! Cork, I have not cracked a snail yet but will tomorrow.
