those things still confuse me
I have a 798c that is not working properly. I have it hooked up to an I-Pilot trolling motor. If i run it in compact side scan mode the picture is always black. If I change it to any other color, except inverse it is black. When I change it to quad beam or the other beam option, I can see struture like a normal fish finder and also locate fish. Is this something i have setup wrong or is it the 798c? Any help would be appreciated or if someone can sent me the right direction. I am in the west tennessee area. Thanks!

I still got my old paper graph that was the best I ever used can t get paper any more or I would still use it
I'm not a Hummingbird guy, I run Lowrance. If you are connecting it to a universal sonar transducer in the trolling motor it wouldn't have side scan elements in it. You would need to have it hooked to the side imaging transducer that comes with the unit. At least that's how it is with Lowrance.
You will get a lot more information about this by posting in the electronics forum.
sounds like an incompatible transducer. The built in txducers don't have down or side imaging.
Thanks everyone! I hooked the old 798 transducer to bottom of trolling motor this weekend. Didn't get chance to put in water but i think that will cure my problem. Is there any side scan's that will work with the built in transducer? Just asking!
Side imaging is a very finicky beast. Attaching a side imaging transducer to a trolling motor will give you skewed readings unless you can keep it absolutely straight. Side imaging, even when attached to a boat, requires you to run in a straight line with no turning to work properly. Any turning, even slight turning, will twist the screen image and give you undesirable results.
