    Default Monticello 8-5-17

Made the drive to Monticello this morning. Wind was right for drifting so that's how we started out (down close to the dam). Right off, we caught 2 blues, then, nothing for a good while. Moved around & drifted several more times with little to show. Changed over & dropped anchors to bottom fish in about 60'. Bite was slow all morning at the spots we fished on the bottom.

Ended up with 36 small blues. Quit at noon since it was getting hot.

For a slow bite you still had a good catch. Enjoyed your report and thanks for sharing.

It's not the numbers or the size, it's the time spent on the water!

Try cut bait. White perch work well there I hear. Start off looking for the bait. Then switch to cats when you have caught a dozen or so perch.
That would be my plan of action if it was me. The perch should be easy. Just drift a bit with some minnows.

We usually do better on cut herrin & Shad. These seem to have more blood which creates a trail for cats to find the bait. However, these cats will bite a lot of different baits. Most folks drift cut bait over deep water( 100'+) for a lot of small cats. Keep a close eye on the weather, a south west wind can make the lake pretty rough.

We usually start out drifting if the wind is strong enough to move us around. Then, if we are not getting a lot of bites, we anchor & fish on the bottom. I have the best luck when I find a spot that drops from 40 to about 80' when bottom fishing.

I never know where to start since we don't fish it very often. So, just get out somewhere in the middle & start drifting.

    Good luck.
