    Default the minnow tank

used to be, when id finish a nightstalk, id dump my minnows. some nights that would expensive since the bite wouldnt be all that good and wed have a lot of minnows left over so i made a holding tank to put em in till i could use em again. i built the tank back in the spring and its been in continous use since and has kept minnows alive all sumer, even in all this heat. some guys over on the main board asked me about the set up so i took some photos for them, since we know a photo is worth a thousand words. I made the tank out of a 55 gallon plastic drum. the pump is one thats used in yard ponds, the filter is a 6in pvc pipe connector, set up to hold filters and charcoal, and i also put an aerator on it and put a couple inches of pea stone in the bottom, which gives the bacteria a place to do their work on the stuff that falls to the bottom. sorta like how the gravel works to keep the water clean in an aquarium. I put the tank out back under the shade trees so id dint need insulated. I was worried about the water gettin too hot, but apperantly the shade was good enought to keep the water from gettin too hot. In addition to the aerator and filter, i put a couple airstones and the pump is a 110v aquarium air pump i got at walmart. the stuff for the filter and the pump and the pea stone i got at lowes.

the first photo shows the top of the tank with the acess removed. from left to right across the back is the acess for the power cord for the pump and the lines from the air pump. the first pipe out of the tank is from the pump which pumps the water from the tank to the filter and the aerator. the filter is in the center of the drum and the aerator line is on the right. the valves control the water flow and pressure to the filter and the aerator.

the second photo shows the acess cover in place and the filter removed. the filter line is moved toward the back to allow the filter unit to be removed.

the third photo shows the aerator at work

yeah, i took a long hard look at my med operations and figgerred i could make something that would keep my minnows alive, since the meds seem to keep me going, figgered it would have the same effect on the minnows

I've been thinking about that for minnows. I hate dumping them. I thought about using an old aquarium, but your idea is a lot less breakable.

I made a worm container for my nightcrawlers and redworms to keep from setting them loose. That way I always have some worms to fish with when I take my little boy. I used an old green storage container form wally world, filled it with dirt, and keep it under the lean-to behind the shed. all I do is toss them a banana peel and some water once a week and I always have some worms to fish with. Plus my boy loves to go back there and dig through 'em to see how many he can find. The worms even multiply. i have only bought worms twice this season. Once this spring and once a few weeks ago since the suplly got low.
    John 21:3
Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing." They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing.

And we act like this Nightstalking thing is new.

For some excitment, read the next verse. A special guest arrived, they filled their coolers and had a fish fry on the beach...in the morning. My kind of people.- Bowfin

That brought back a wonderful memory of my grandpa. He had a worm bed in half of a concrete pipe (the kind they put under driveways for the ditches to run through). Anyway, he covered it with a piece of plywood and kept it rich with peat moss and the occasional coffee grinds/banana peels/whatever. He would let me go "dig" his worms for him. I had such fun in that bed of worms and felt like grandpa's bestest helper!
