    Default Successful Sturgeon Spearing Season

A very successful 2015 sturgeon spearing season for us. We found a muddy spot where we spotted a few fish on the camera before the season and had clear water, so we stayed there and it payed off with seeing four sturgeon and spearing two. Tammy passed opening day on a smaller legal fish, but she wanted to hold out for a big fish. Our friend Paul (Hoofer) joined us and on his first day ever spearing, and I took a side angle throw at one in the distance and came up empty. On Hoofs second day of ever spearing, he speared a 47 inch fish. I went to change the propane tank and heard a faint cry of “I Got One” in the high wind. After opening the door, I found Hoofer pulling on the spear rope. Hoof made it back to sit with me for one more day and we counted 3 walleye, 2 minnows, 2 sheep head, and 2 burbot
but no sturgeon. I sat a solo trip and listened to the ice crack and wind blow and after jumping the hole to peak out the window to see how bad the visibility was outside, I looked back on the side of the hole to see one out to the side and down a few feet. I grabbed the spear and let another side angle shot go and this time connected with a nice 56.5 lb and 61.3 in sturgeon. I had to dial a friend to help pull it in, being my very first fish, I didn't know what I was in for. A call to G-man, who got one the day before, got forwarded to Jim G. who was not far off in the Sturgeon Spearing Club House and thanks to him we pulled the fish on to the ice after launching the second spear when the first spear was only holding on by one barb. I still might get some ice fishing trips in before it's time to think big fish back on Lake Michigan, but it won't be long and the summer will be here.
