I wear goggles and fingerless leather gloves. I have forced ventilation to the outside over my pot so I don't wear a respirator. I've worked with lead since the 70s and last check my blood work is still coming back well below warning levels. Since I do work with lead products a lot and their alloys get checked every two years.

I would like to add that when I'm cooking down rough scrap yard lead I do it outside in a 20 pound cast pot. I wear a full face shield, welding jacket and leather full fingered gloves. If its really dirty I wear a half mask respirator. Might be over the top but we all know lead and alloys used with it are pretty toxic when not handled properly. It is nice to see our asking these questions first, After 40years of this I am still kicking. enjoy the hobby my friend.

Thanks skeetbum, I like it when folks new to the art think about safety. The www has many more pieces of advice than I could ever offer.

I appreciate the info. One more question if I could.
What kind of mask are you using? A heavy particle mask or a cartridge style? Thanks again.

I use a cartridge style half mask. I would wear a full face but I wear glasses so I opt for a face shield when I have the half mask on. I think a heavy particle would work fine, but I have several cartridge styles and just use them.

I wear long sleeve and long pants and leather shoes. i heat my lead outside my shop door with a fan blowing so fumes are not coming inside
flux your lead with candle and see where your fumes are going by the smoke. Make sure it is not going to rain and if some reason it does have something to set over and get out of the way i have been told one drop of water can cause it to explode. also sweat can drip also. I wear latex gloves two pair as i have been told handling the lead during and after the lead can go thru the skin. So i wear them when i am clipping the spurs. And power painting. I wear the cartridge mask. With lead and plastics. I wear glasses get safety glasses or a face shield. Don't over heat your lead as i hear that when u get fumes off lead. Cub48
