Gills are supposed to have bars like that. I have never seen any that visible but they are supposed to be there. I think its a regular gill. It may be the perfect water to bring out the color of the fish. Can you post some pics of other types fish from the lake? If they look diff then yoh know its just the water thats making the color come out so good. Very cool though, i would agree with the hybrid theory but those bars are supposed to be there, they just pop out more. I dont know of any other type fish a gill can cross bred with to make them look like that. I know yellow perch have black bars as well but im pretty sure they cannot cross with gills. I would like to know what your local freshwater biologist thinks. Awesome gill, mounting material for sure.

Thanks for all the replies....I agree with you Young Gun. Pretty sure it's a pure bluegill. Guessin it may be a particular strain tho. Have not talked to any DNR people or biologists either. Here are a few more pics from same body of water.

Those are beautiful gills. We run into those striped ones from time to time and I often wonder what's up with that. Thanks for sharing a great photo.
It is not about the equipment you have to use,
It is about how you use the equipment you have. :D
