Real estate is a bit tight so I'm looking mainly at 5" units or a one of the 7" models that have a more compact overall design. Right now I'm leaning towards the Garmin echoMap, Humminbird Helix, and RayMarine DragonFly Pro lines. The Helix and Dragon both have a higher screen resolution that I really like. I'm looking for any good, bad and ugly experiences you may have. Or recommendations for other units.

I bought the Lowrance Elite-5 at Cabelas last Summer and think it's great. Now I have never had ANYTHING like it so I can't compare it but It's a lot cheaper that getting scuba certified .
May all the fish tales you catch be longer than the ones you tell !

Only recommendation I can say is buy the biggest screen you can afford even if it means waiting and saving a little longer. In the long run, you won't regret it.

I saw a nice HDS - 12 that was accessorized with a nice Triton. I should be able to afford it around 2050.

Then that should be your 1st plan.
However if that falls through you mentioned either a 5" or a 7". I have no idea of what your budget or income is so what I was trying to point out you may want to go bigger if possible. When you are using a 5" screen split between GPS & sonar that leaves on 2 1/2" per view. If you go with the 7" and spit the screen you'll have 3 1/2" per view (big difference). The larger screen is especially beneficial when using GPS and trying to locate a waypoint.
Honestly what you buy doesn't matter to me, I could care less. The advice I gave you was the same advice given to me a few years back when I upgraded my electronics and after using my units for a few years I'm glad I got the bigger unit.
    Just sayin....

I think I'm on the same timeframe...let's see...Dale graduates HS in 2020, then college in 2024...a couple more years of him sponging off me, say 2030, then a couple years to save up for the 17'6" Bass boat (dual power poles, 12 inch screen, 150 Yamaha)....I think I have you beat...I'll be able to get my boat by 2035!

Great time at Cracker Barrel this morning! Not too many tall tales (if there is such a thing as too many).

Thanks for setting it up Brent!
