    Default that one lake

Hey all, I've been quite busy of late. School, work, but This weekend I will be heading up to roscommon county to fish houghton and higgins lake. Houghton I know very well, but I hear rumors of lake trout, smelt, and whitefish in higgins? I'm not asking for secret holes or hot spots. Just a good nudge in the right direction. We'll most likely be heading out of the west side of the DNR launch.

Deep water. Tons of tricks to fish the trout. Jigging heavy sand kickers, little cleos, and other baits tipped with hearing or smelt.

Tip ups with line tied to a barrel swivel followed by 20 feet of mono to your choice of hook. I like a three way tied on the bottom with a short drop weight on one side and a 3 foot leader on the other with my hook on the end. Number 2 octopus sometimes and sometimes treble hooks small in size. This rig allows the minnow to swim free while the weight holds the bait down. Usually set my weight 2 foot off the bottom which allows my three foot minnow leader to swim in depths from on the bottom to 5 foot off the bottom. A rig not many people know about, understand, or use.

Before our friendly ginger beard garden gnome says it, I'll take the wind out of his sale and venture to guess he would say:

Thanks guys. we tried trolling the west side over the summer. All that deep water structure caught my eye. No luck for us. We marked fish at every depth but no takers. Did get a few nice perch and rockbass.
Figured the pings were smelt or suspended baitfish and tried to fish below them.

I have my tip-ups set with a 4 foot leader, swivel, and an egg sinker above it.
Got a few nice spoons to toss in the box as well. Would jigging raps work well?
