Dust cap comes off
I have put a new dust cap on on rod my hubs twice. One was a regular dust cap, and another was an expensive bearing buddy. Both have came off going down the road. Anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?

Ok, the reason I asked that, the trailer we had that kept losing dust caps was I think 8 or 10 inch wheels. Everything had to be just right with them, or was gonna be trouble of some kind.
Beyond that, if everything is in good shape - not getting hot - I would look towards how well they are fitting and tightening it up like Speckfinder said.
I have learned it doesn’t work to have too much grease in there - like full with no airspace in the cap. Most of trailers I’ve pulled have the little rubber plug covering a grease fitting in the end of the axle - I lost a few of those plugs over the years until after greasing, I take my finger and rake a little out before putting the plug back.
Seems like it has to have a little room for expansion at operating temps.

Yes, I have had that problem on more than one trailer over the years. Some say it’s caused from over filling with grease. Clean hubs good with alcohol and use electrical tape to tape them on good. This is standard procedure for me now. They stay on.

I use a hammer and chisel and put 4 notches in the end of them if I have that problem. Never tried the trailer ball but that should work too.

Are the tires balanced? If they are way out, it may be a violent enough vibration to “shake” the caps off?
