    Default Merc won't start

The motor is a 1983(ish) 9.8 Merc. Little use but has set for 15 years. Last year I ran it in a tub and worked fine. It has a new switch box, fuel tank and line, spark plugs. It is getting a good blue spark from both plugs. Fuel is getting to the carb. Plugs smell like fuel. What am I missing?

Compression check? Try some 2 cycle starting fluid.

Yes. The switch box is new but with the old one there was no spark. The new fixed that. Spark plugs also new.

I would pull and clean the Carburetor .. When you ran it the last time it could have broke some trash loose and plugged the Jets. I found that using Acetone does an excellent job in dissolving old varnish in clogged ports and will not harm anything. It does a better job than cleaners sold for this purpose

You need 3 thing 1. Fuel 2. spark(fire) 3. compression. With these something is suppose to happen anyway. Not saying that it will run good but you do have to have the 3.
