Default Exhaust plate on 2008 merc 60 4 stroke

I am having extended issues with my mercury 60 hp 4 stroke. It cranks fine and runs well until it gets hot. After I kill it and fish when I try to go to next spot it spits and sputters back firing and won’t run. If I take the cowling off it will start running fine. I have taken it to shop multiple times with no success. A new mechanic says it is exhaust plate. Anyone had this issue?

My neighbor had that problem on his. When this happens again, remove the hull and on the right side looking from the front there is small tank with fuel lines running to it low on the motor. Feel of it and see if it is hot. Some times it will be warm and some times hot to the touch, depending on how long it has been off. I know this sounds crazy but dip some water and pour on it until it is cool and try to crank again. If it runs ok then, there is a fuel pump in the tank and gets a vapor lock or vaporizing the gas in the tank and the fuel pump can't pick it up. I thought it was crazy the first time I tried it but it works. If you replace the pump inside, the problem will go away. He ran it for several years pouring water on it and when I helped him change the pump, it hasn't missed a lick in 3 years. Might save carrying it to a shop. It's not hard to replace. He carried it to a shop a couple of times and they couldn't find the problem.

Taking cowl off and exhaust plate don't work together. Makes no sense and on that motor I don't believe you have a exhaust plate. I would think letting cool air get in and it starts running good is what deltarat was talking about. Has to be fuel in related and most likely that electric pump.

Had an issue my 2012 60hp 4 stroke after I bought it last year the vst tank(it's were the high pressure pump is) ended up having old fuel residue and after cleaning vst(watch utube video on this) it ran great. Now I've replaced all fuel lines from tank to the vst including new low pressure pump(no rebuild kit for this) . Part of this I've done here on the St. johns river in Florida this last week while on vacation. SuperRat, I've fished Lake D'Arbonne ,it's a fantastic Crappie lake !
May all the fish tales you catch be longer than the ones you tell !
