    Angry Leaks

I have a riveted aluminum boat. Some rivets under the front deck leak enough that the pump would run all day. I have asked around for people who would interested in fixing/welding this and everyone smiles and says "no thanks, too big of a job because it is aluminum." Any other ideas? I doubt that jb weld would hold up long in wave pounding

Something I would try. Get a small can of auto body undercoating. Clean area real good and put a couple of layers about half dollar size around each leaking rivet. Let it set up good. Should hold up unless rubbed off on ramp. Best way is to put plug in and fill bottom with water and let sit for a while then find rivets that are actually leakin.

Don’t know, it appears to be nothing more than the undercoating getting hyped really big. Wouldn’t be my first choice. Like Tn fisher said rhino lining might be a better overall fix. But I would try with something cheaper first to make sure it stops. Then when you know where to make repair go with the better stuff.

I used this product to seal the roof edge of my RV where it joined the side. I keep a roll for emergency use on boat. So far haven't needed it but I guarantee you it will seal any leak. Not sure it would be good where boat meets trailer bunks or is subjected to rubbing but it seals and holds underwater or above. Just make darn sure you have it where you want it because once you apply it, it is not coming off without a lot of scrapping and peeling and cussing.

I have drilled out many a rivet and put in a button head bolt with a little epoxy under the head and a Nyla-nut with out any further leaks. Some have been in the boat for 20 years.

They do sell replacment rivets that you can put in. Even if you cannot get at the otherside.

That said, I've utilized BONDO on older boats with leaky rivets. I had a john boat that was so old that, when it was drug around, it wore through one of the bottom ribs (thats a lot of dragging). I used Bondo back in the 1990's on that and it is still going strong to this day.

I had the same problem with my riveted hull boat. I drilled out the leakers as deltarat suggested and replaced them with 3/4" stainless steel self-clinching studs and a lock nut. Butter them up with some 3M super weatherstrip adhesive - no more leaks. Fastenal sells them.
