    Default mercury 45 hp classic 50

    Have a 1988 Merc 45 hp classic 50 with bad switch box. Tested bad by marine repair shop.
    Question: I have a 1986 Merc 45 hp classic 50 that has a good switch box. Both year / sn# applications are for part number 332-5772A 2.
    The 1988 has the coils grounded to the bolts that hold the box to the engine. On the 1986 the switch box has 6 terminals and wires on the right and 8 on the left. The 1988 has 3 on right and 8 on left. I want to just switch out the boxes but not sure about the
    wiring?

    Are the 1986 and the 1988 boxes interchangeable?

    Boats.net has replacement Pt # 332-5772A 2 for $264.80 (the illustration of it shows six terminals on the right bank}
    They also offer a CDI replacement Pt. # 114-5772 for $219.97

    Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

    Upon further review: Both motors are 1986 models, manufactured within a few months of each other. Both Switch boxes are the same, 8 terminals on left and 5 terminals on right. One uses more wires most likely due to a different stator. Will most likely order a new CDI switch box to make the repair.

    (The bad switch box had 2 terminals on the right bank that had plastic caps screwed on them which I was confused about till I unscrewed one of them.)

    The plastic and we're installed somewhere when the stator was relaxed, went from original to a replacement red stator , new style stator only uses half of the posts on the switchboard
