    Default help! oil leak

Just bought this Mercury 402 outboard. First buy yet, changed the gear lube for the first time, correctly. (Took bottom screw out, than top, filled till it came out the top and replaced screws.) Next day I noticed oil leaking from a very small hole on the front side of the lower unit. Been reading forums for awhile and cannot figure out what the hole is even. I will post a picture in just a few minutes

Read through this Chris and maybe it will help. I am not good at explaining how to do it.

Chris that hole should be nothing but a water drain for the exhaust section of the motor. Is the oil coming out clear gear oil or darker oil? Would think no way gear oil can get there unless you have a really bad shaft seal above the gear box and water pump area. If it is dark colored oil and is pretty sticky to the touch it is probably nothing but unburned oil residue from the exhaust side. Normally you won't see this but in this really hot weather you will see this on some 2 stroke outboards usually dripping out of the prop but in your case I bet you have it tilted up.

The hole sits directly between the drain and vent screws. It's hardly any thing. Couple drops a day maybe. BUT it's looks and smells like fresh gear oil. When I drained the oil when I first got it, it looks completely fine, just a little dark and green. Still having trouble figuring out how to post a picture

Hopefully BarnicalBill will see this and reply. He knows a lot more about Merc motors than I do. Still makes no sense to me cause if oil can come out water can get in. And I am assuming you had no water in your lower unit oil. Could it possibly be residue from when you filled it and it ran out the top hole?

I believe that is just a weep hole and the drip will stop after you have ran it a while.

X2 on the weep hole. I believe they were put in place to "weep" any excess air that could reside in the lower unit after filling. What you are probably seeing is small air bubbles bursting causing the small amount of oil to weep out the hole. They are one way as they will let stuff out but not back in. Even filling from the bottom hole will cause small air bubbles. Heck, the oil container can cause bubble. Not to mention running at speed. Hence the reason for the hole to vent or weep excess pressure.

Was going to take it out for the first time today and changed the gear oil one last time just to be sure, upon draining it I found the oil was very milky. So now where should I look?
