I had one of these on a 40 HP Yamaha. The grinding noise "probably" has nothing to do with the oil. In my case, the problem was that a motor magnet had come unglued. Remove the motor and take it to an alternator/starter shop. They can reglue the magnets, and lube the bushings.

In my case, the magnets had also cracked in half. I contacted CMC, and received no assistance other than, buy a new one. Cost was $550. (ouch)

    Hope this helps

Mystic 2216 is no longer made. The equavilent is SAE 20 or 30 non-detergent. PAGE 6

Are the magnets on the outboard motor or are you referring to the motor on the cmc tilt/trim unit? Not real mechanical!!

He's talking about the drive motor on your trim unit. If it still tilts up and down I'd check all the pivot points for binding or loose fasteners. Maybe shoot some lube on those points.

Cray is exactly right. My unit would still trim up and down, but would screech, howl, and grind the entire time. The newer units are designed a little better, more compact, and the electrical components and hydraulic parts are built into one machined block of aluminum.
Just don't expect any parts help from Cmc. I thought I would at least be able to buy a replacement motor, but Cmc only offered support by selling me a new unit.

Hydraulic fluid is not like motor oil it. It does not serve as a lubricant for your trim and does not need to be changed. It simply builds pressure. If you're oil resevoir is low you have a leak, in which case is most likely a seal. I'm also leaning towards electrical motor issues if you're hearing a (grinding) noise.
