Mercury oil for a Mercury motor, johnson/evinrude oil for a johnson/evinrude motor.
I got an mid to late 80's mercury 115 hp motor and have been using penzoils high performance plus 2 cycle oil but have been told that it is the worse oil to use, any comments. Also been told that i should use a mercury oil for a mercury motor. Just wondering what everybody else thinks.

Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.

Back when they were still publishing a magazine called Bass and Walley boats I had a subscription. 2 times a year the would run a article on oils. Your pensoill high po oil always got one of the best ratings and their synthetic blend was what all the racing guys used. And I agree with Bill as long as it meets the TCW3 rating your good to go.

All I know is that 2 mechanics said that the quality of gas and oils products now a days is so poor compared to years past that they suggest that everyone use additives to every tank of fuel and they sould use oil that is made for their motors. The penzoil oil I use is said not to mix as well as the mercury oil and it makes it hard to adjust the carbs and when you get them adjusted good then they foul the plugs.

You will be just fine using Penzoil. Look at the rating, TCW3. All the motor companies have some third party refinery engineer, package and label their brand of oil. When you buy Mercury oil you are paying a lot for just the name Mercury. Don't get fooled into that line of thinking. When is the last time you heard of a Mercury, Johnson, Yamaha, Ford, Chevy, etc refinery (make sense)!
"All I know is that 2 mechanics said that the quality of gas and oils products now a days is so poor compared to years past that they suggest that everyone use additives to every tank of fuel and they sould use oil that is made for their motors." You are using oil for your motor, TCW3. Find a manual for your motor and it will tell you what to look for.

Now stop and think about that statement. There is a major push in the US to get more miles per gallon and reduce our demand for oil. That is not going to happen by making inferior gas and oil. True ethanol isn't the best thing that has happened but on the other hand it is NOT causing near as many problems as some would have us believe. I don't promote any certain oil and it just so happens the Penzoil use to be the only oil I would use and still would if needed. Over the years the only oil I ever had problems with was Kmart brand. It was causing my plugs to foul. But it may have been the wrong type oil as I didn't know about the ratings back then. What it all boils down to is pick a brand that you like and use it as long as it is rated TCW3. BTW, in case you didn't know, TCW3 stands for Two Cycle Water cooled 3rd revision. If still in doubt you can't go wrong by using what the manufacturer recommends. I am, well was, an outboard mech so I do know a little bit about what I am talking about.

'94 Johnson 115 and I run either Penzoil XLF or Premium Plus, whiever I find cheaper at Walmart. Less carbon buildup than the regular dino oil but $20 cheaper per gallon almost than the BRP stuff with the same performance.
