I just bought the cheap Zebco UL spincast reel....I think it's a Zebco 11(?!?). I used a zip tie long enough to criss-cross around the reel and pulled it tight. Then I used black electrical tape to keep it from sliding. I dont collapse my poles but it wouldnt be a problem if I did...just reel in the line as the pole collapses. You can get the cheap line winder reels for about $5 each but I wouldnt recommend them.

Backing goes on the fly reel first. The fly line goes on top of the backing. Here's an example:

I don't use reels for this type of set up, but there are lots of inexpensive reels that would work if that's what you wanted. A cheap fly reel or a little underspin would both work. You could tape them to the pole with electrician's tape. I do that on some Tennessee-handled spinning rods I have.

    Thanks for tips!
you won't have that problem if you use braid for your main line, and mono as a leader.
When I used my 12ft collapsibles, this is how I rigged them. I used Cortland Braid 15lb test for my main line, and hand made my "snelled" leaders with 6lb mono (loop knot in one end, tied hook on the other :p ). I used them mostly for fishing the button bushes of Barkley Lake (aka "buck brush"). Had a slip float on the main line, and the leader was around 6-8" long. I never fished them more than 3ft deep (water depth) but sometimes had to thread the float/line/hook/minnow down thru a couple of feet of bush ... to get to the water :D And I can safely say, that a 12ft fiberglass collapsible rod with this braid/mono setup, will lift a 2+lb Crappie out of the water - thru the brush - and into the boat

I just tie my line to the eye at the end of the pole and use the keeper to wrap the line while in storage. I have never had a problem with the eye coming off for any reason and I use my poles religiously. Can't beat them for fighting a good sized shellcracker.
    Birddog,

I pray that I may live to fish until my dying day. And when it comes to my last cast I then most humbly pray. When in the Lord's great landing net and peacefully asleep. That in His mercy I be judged, BIG ENOUGH TO KEEP.

    Default What lb test?

I usually use 4lb test for blue gill and crappie, but on a cane pole what lb test should I be using? I have the cane pole with the eye at the end and they two prongs lower to tie the line to too. Not sure how I'm going to tie on the line for sure either.
