Lots of long rod folks here. Not me. But I don't fish a lot of the more popular techniques and I don't fish with any electronics. I am pretty much just a simple cast and retrieve guy. I either fish from a solo canoe or from the bank. My rods are all short. My longest is 5' 6" long. I find shorter rods to be more easy to handle in a canoe or on a brushy bank.

I have been tempted to try a longer rod for jigging but so far I've resisted the temptation.

For me a 7 footer is the perfect length I like to use. I only use longer rods when fishing during the spawn. They are needed to probe the brush. For livescoping open water fish I like a 8-9ft rod because I like to pitch to them. Give me a 6 footer to dock shoot. A rod like a tool and having the right one of the job is important.

16,17 and 18 footers for me, but I mainly pitch 25-28 feet out to open water fish. Granted, I dont guess Im very stealthy, but in 8-11 feet of water around here you have to go after the jumbos way out there or they will cruise off at 20 feet from you.

I used to use 13' for forward facing sonar . Many keep going longer . I have neuropathy and found I can flip a jig out 30 ' if I need to with 11.5' pole. Here most of the time fish not too spooky and aim for 15 to 20' . Much lighter and still strong enough to boat flip fish. Long enough to stop a bait or slow it down enough. I use 1/8 or 1/4 oz jig but only add a split shot if fishing really deep. Those guys using the 16' or longer poles using a heavy weight most of the time.
