Would think it takes a whole lot to break off one of those spines.
Back before I saw the light, I used to purposely fish for those nasty things. Old man I fished with dropped one about waist high. Pectoral stuck in his calf like a lawn dart. He jerked it out, rubbed some slime off the fish, rubbed it on the wound. I was speechless, thought hes gonna lose that leg. He passed a couple years back, still had both legs.

I told Vicki I was supposed to take some belly slime off that fish and rub it in the cut before I asked her to get it out of the boat. I’ve actually done that on small cuts and pokes from cats. This cut was bleeding so bad I would have never gotten slime to the cut.

Those salt water cats was said to have poison in those spines. Either way getting finned by one certainly made for a very sore wound the next day. The slime did make it a lot less sore. 0

catfish have poison glands that excrete venom in their skin under the spined fins ,when they are in fight for your life mode .
they lay the two pex down and the dorsal as well in it and then raise them up for the dual .
it is my understanding that ALL catfish do this ,not just one species . from my many different impales , i would say this about that ,brown bullheads seem to hurt the worst , but to be sure a gaftop thru the sneaker into the instep that someone has to "RIP" out is EXACTLLY like the pain when a woman delivers a baby .....er at least I thunk so ....

Mr. Google says : That's what I heard back in my younger days, and have had an instance or two to prove it out. I still have all my limbs & digits, so it must have worked. Kinda makes sense when you think about it, seeing as how rough handling of a fish removes that slime, and we've all probably seen the results of that removal of their protective slime coating (from previous handling).

    Is catfish slime antibacterial?

Ravi, member of the development team, said slime or mucus of catfish contains active protein compounds in the form of Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs). These compounds have the potential to be used to heal wounds because it has a strong bactericidal activity to kill pathogenic bacteria.

Ouch!! Those cats sure can be dangerous. My dad once had a fin go through the palm of his hand and come out the topside between those little bones. Said other than passing kidney stones the worst pain he ever felt. He was fooling with a catfish on a trotline when it happened. He ran lines and yo yo's for a long time, not commercially. After that incident I don't think he ever fooled with them again. Hope you heal up soon!
