I came in to the marina from a guide trip today and while I was getting his catch out of my ice box, the client was watching. I removed all the fish then picked up a large bag of ice to pour part into the fish in my weigh-in bag. I poured most of the remaining ice into the bag with the fish. When I got ready to drop the almost empty ice bag back into my ice box, he and I both saw it. A snake in the bottom of the box where the ice bag had been all day since 5 am! What the HEY!
I took a good look at it and obviously a 22 pound bag of ice had caused his demise. Closer inspection told me it was a harmless water snake with round pupils. I grabbed a pair of needle-nose fish pliers and flipped it out of the boat into the lake. Then the questions began.
How in the world did that thing end up in my closely sealing lid box? Why didn’t I take a picture of it before I tossed it? Did a crappie or sauger spit it back up? Was it on or in the bag of ice I had dumped into the box earlier? The mystery thickens.

Wow. Do you have an overboard drain that stays open? Was he small enough to have came in it if so?
