The problem with nanofil is finding a knot that doesn't slip and is easy to tie. I love the 1# nano, casts like a rocket but I've lost more fish to slipped knots than I care to admit.

I guess I’m luckier than most. I’ve been using Nanofil over two years and my knots hold. Also, I do t tie it direct due to its lack of abrasion resistance. NOTHING I’ve found yet will outcast it and I’ve tried a bunch. I use a double uni to tie my 2 lb Nanofil to a 4 lb leader, 5 loops each. I will also say that it’s a love /hate relationship. If you drag it over a branch it might break there later for seemingly no reason. I have also landed several fish over 3lbs with it. When it’s unaffected it can be tough stuff.

The crystal fireline I use is much tougher and not near as castable. Also hard to find it in long enough spools. The ice guys and jewelry makers buy a lot of 50yd spools so be careful what you order. Sufix nanobraid is also similar and very good and tough. I use both of those in two pound. In my opinion the Nanofil is worth buying a spool and see if you can get along with it. I also use 4 lb Nanofil on a 6’6” medium action rod with a 1500 reel and it casts a 1/16 a very long way and will stand up to stripers in the 18” range.

I found Nanofil is perfect for casting or dock shooting small lite jigs. I couldn’t cast it with accuracy because it will cast a country mile.

NanoFil is completely different from FireLine. I used it for 18 months straight when it first came out….back in 2010. My son also used it for the same time period as me. I used the 1 and 2 pound rated lines…although I can tell you those ratings are nowhere near being correct. As Skeet says….if there is anything that will out cast it I have not seen it. I always used a FC leader rated at 3# test. I never had an issue with knot failures. While I caught a ton of crappie and bluegill with it I also landed tons of Smallies in the 18-21 inch range….that translates to Smallies up to the 5 pound range. The only thing I disliked about it was really it’s lack of abrasion resistance. All braid had this issue but NanoFil is the worst I’ve seen for it. I wanted this line to gain casting distance with 1/64 ounce jigs. It gave me that in spades. I eventually quit using it and went on to other lines. I doubt I would ever use it again as I now use premium Varivas Infinity braid that casts almost as far as the NanoFil and outshines all other braided lines out there.

I ran a spool of nanofil once. For me it performed pretty similarly to braid. As mentioned, hard to tie and not abrasion resistant at all. Had to use a leader, although I do anyway. I found that it would fatigue after a few months of use just from running through the guides, had to strip off a hundred yards or so for it to hold a knot again. I didn't buy any more, not enough advantages over regular braid.

Fireline is braid that is fused instead of woven. It's easier to tie with and has a little more memory (less wind knots and tip wrapping), but is larger in diameter than regular braid. I like it.
