Many people over fill there bearing buddies they think the center needs to be all the way out, you want enough grease to just see the spring compress a little. By over filling you blowout the rear seal.

Picked her up today. New axle, hubs, buddy bearings, plus labor........$401. My fault, but I should be rolling smoove for a wile now.

I had one go out last year coming from crank fest in Mississippi. This happened in Birmingham when I stopped for gas and lucky it didn't ruin the axle. By it being a tandem axle trailer I pulled the tire and tied the axle up and was able to limp to bass pro to get it repaired to get home.

Great advice & comments, boat off trailer at lake house, noticed inside wheel had grease slung out it, was able to get to town, get new seal & grease, saved that time. Take time out on trips & ck them . It's the little thing that turns n to big things. Y'all b safe & fill those coolers.

Couple of years ago I over greased the bearing buddies and blew out the back seal and had to replace hub and axle. We now carry a digital temperature probe. Checking the rear of the wheel for broken seals is good advice. Also will probably start carrying an extra hub.

I bought a new trailer last year and the nut on one bearing was
Over tightened. It blew the rear seal when It over heated on the drive home ! Grrr.
I took it back and got it replaced, what a pain.

Best way to check it?
I noticed i had grease slung on the wheel but it looked ok. Buddy still there. Added more grease and it expanded out ok.
Inner hub seems ok.
Jacked it up and spun it.
Smooth and quiet.

But that slung grease still bothers me

If it is slinging grease on the inside of rim, better than average chance its taking on water. If its on the outside, it might be extra from under the cap. When I was running buddies, I would push the center of the rubber cap inward to help form a vacuum. It might help. If it were me, I would pull it, if the races and bearings are still good, the inner seal is cheep to replace for peace of mind.
