I would say that 80% to 90% of people don't take enough time to learn what there sonars are capable of showing them. They still are just using them as a depth finder and not the sonar they really are. I am still in the learning process myself. My Humminbird 899 SI has more than doubled my catch ratio this past year. I have learned to find structure, shad schools, and even fish with it. So I would like to say what ever type sonar you have take the time to learn what it is showing you and most of all trust it as it can be your eye's under the water for sure.

I would also like to mention if you need some help or advice about your sonar just check out this forum:

Love using sonar to show me underwater structure of all types. If you will use it to find the different structure, you will find fish.

Nothing can be cooler than fishing a body of water 100 times over and then getting down imaging or side imaging. It opens up a whole new world. Many wrecked cars and mysteries have been solved as a result of these things along with missing people being found.

Two years ago, I was trolling Lake Huron. I normally don't run DI or SI on this body of water as I am not looking for specific structure. On this day I happened to notice something odd so I flipped it on really quick. On the bottom rested an old snowmobile. A short distance away was a quad. Someone had lost them through the ice. Wish I had screen shots of that. It was pretty cool to find!

sure one can catch fish without these hitec units, having said that but having these units and KNOWING HOW TO USE THEM WILL INPROVE ONE'S CATCH.i have two at back,1199 and 859 ,one atfront helix 9 di gps, they have inprove my fishing multi times,i am now using my di at front fishing ledges and finding fish that you can not see with a 2d and proably will not see with si or di at console.i have to get straight parallel to dropoff and with slice beam can go right up to it and see the fish in the dropoff whereas the 2d blends the lower bottom in with the higher bottom missing the fish completely, you may once in a while see it at console if you go straight up the dropoff but it is hard to do
