Cray, sense you've been there and done that. What design cutters would you recommend?

Good point Charlie. I don't have one in mine, overlooked for whatever reason. Got the cutters though.

I keep a pair of these Kobalts in my boat and a second pair in my main tackle bag. They're some of the most useful tools I own.

I order Knipex cutting pliers for the ER to cut hooks and certain body jewelry. We use them dozens of times a year and they hold up well. For average panfishing hooks and most crank trebles their oblique cutters are the bee's knees but they run about $40/pair. They can slip into tighter gaps than traditional side cutters.

Those Kobolts Dutch posted are good all around cutters. I also added a set of minis in that style and the blunt nosed model. I sure could have used the mini's in my situation on that day.

I'm going to make another recommendation here. If you haven't purchased a set take a couple of good hooks with you. Make sure they will cut a hook. Some of those cheaper side cutters won't cut a hook unless you get it way back in the jaws. And that can be hard to do at times. Find a set that are good enough and strung enough to cut the hook at the least the mid point of the jaws. If you already have a pair do the same thing. I have 3 pair of needle nose with side cutters in my boat. Only one pair was good enough to cut that hook.

    Great reminder and story.

I have a first-aid kit in my boat, backpack, and one in the house.

Great idea to vacuum seal the side cutters and kit. Thanks for the story and reminder. I keep some SS sidecutters on board, but I'm going to add another one. I keep a kit on my yak, but until I read your story, just for myself. I'm always sticking my finger with a hook or cutting my finger on my fishing line. I'm old with thin skin. What can I say?

Very good advise. I have had occasion to use wire cutting pliers and the first aid kit on at least three different occasions... twice on other people and once on myself... all because of mishaps with hooks. It's far better to have a well stocked first aid kit and not need it... than it is to need it and not have it. I learned this from experience.

Another reminder, due to the germs and other in the water, might want a bottle of Hydrogen Peroxide for the hook wound or other cuts from line especially braid cuts etc. Or a good antibiotic cream. if not included in the first aid kit
