    Default Poverty Point

Made my annual trip up to the point. Monday was wind extreme and the bite was off , at least for the Doc and myself. Although Doc did catch a 8lb 8oz bass right at dark the first day. Did talk to a guy who had 40 males beating the bank all day. I typically go there for the big fish, so was looking for those big females staging out. Tuesday was severe weather until 1pm or so. The afternoon was fishable, but the bite was not good..Totally thought i had lost my touch. Tried deep, shallow and everywhere in-between. Nothing i was doing was working. Normally it takes a day to adapt and figure out the fish. But this was day 2 and we were still not on a consistent pattern. So instead of changing what i know about the lake, depth, lures etc. We changed the time pattern and it payed off. Got out before sunrise on wednesday and picked up 13 quick. The bite shut down for a while after sunrise. Still picked up 20 fishing north cove throughout the day. The weather had calmed that day and it was sunny. Switched to the south cove in the afternoon and the late bite into the dark was really good. Ended the day with 51 fish. Only downside was nothing better than 2.3lbs. After all, the point has become famous for those grenada sized crappie. Not complaining, the quality was great. Most in the 1lb 8oz range. Many up to 1lb 11oz. Thursday was cloudy with east winds, but not bad enough to affect the fishing. Same pattern, but for some reason the after dark bite was not as good as Wednesday. Same results on the size. Lots of quality fish, but still no "walter". Had to leave Friday am. Storms kept us from that before daylight bite and only had 4 fish before heading back south. Overall, it was a good trip number wise. Ended up with 125 total. All caught and released. Many still full of eggs. Males caught in 17fow. Lots of folks beating the banks, some caught, some didn't but thats fishing. Marina folks told me no one had weighed any really big fish. They are there, just got to be there when it happens. If lucky enough, may make one more trip. The locals said the bite was really good durning the fall and winter..Guess this warm spring has them in a quirky pattern.

Nothing wrong with that catch Bob, especially considering the inconstant weather pattern you were dealt. We caught plenty of pretty fish last week also but not near as many as y'all picked up. Were you using minnows? Thanks for the report.

As much as it reads like a downer trip, you were able to gather all the info and find what would be a success story for us regular guys. I'd take that any day.
Guess that's trophy fishing for ya Poverty Point

We typically tip the jig with a minnow..it seems to improve the catch ratio

Good report, Mr. Bob. I would love to catch that many in a week. Congratulations?

Still a good report Bob and I haven't heard of any "walters" being caught this spring either. I went all winter and only had a handfull of fish over 2#.

Bob as usual enjoyed seeing you and Doc on our annual trip we had a decent trip but the biggest we caught were 2.0 to 2.4 we had quite a few in the 1.12 to 1.15 range so there is hope for next year I think we had around 70 plus some white bass which were mighty tasty fried. We tried everything but beating the banks paid off the best for us fishing about 4' to 5' under corks in 5 to 7 FOW. The Lake gets tougher to fish each year but that's usual with any Lake only time will tell if it continues to produce big fish consistently in the future. I and quite a few fishing buddies think the predator pressure a.k.a. cormorants, pelicans and catfish or the biggest problem with that small reservoir at this time but there is not much that will change that. Hope to see you again next year.

Hi Mike, glad you had a productive trip. I thought that I might make a trip up there this year but too many irons in the fire.
