good luck...
Broke down and got the permit today and tomorrow I head to the edge of the earth. Mixed emotions as I don't want to drive that far, but got to try something different. Never been there before. Closest is crossing the Superior Canal bridge. Any advice will be appreciated. Had a partner for the trip, but he bailed so I guess it's solo.
good luck...
Havent been this year yet. Been wanting to go though. I imagine the water will be high with the Mermentau almost at flood stage. Last year blue and white triple tails and monkey milk jigs were the best in clear water. Id try to find some water moving out of an opening into the marsh. Third cut on left headed north in the superior has alot of trees in water toward the end of the cut. I hope you do well. We will be waiting for a report!
Also, be careful going solo down there. Very seldom do I see anyone while fishing. Phone service is good though...as long as the phone stays dry....
Mermentau, I'm not sure which part you are fishing but where I launch (across the gibstown bridge), they have recently put up a sign that says no Kayak fishing. I only mention this b/c I know you sometimes fish out of a kayak but I also know you have a john boat too, just didn't want you to make a trip for nothing. As far as the fishing, in the front marsh, I usually fish either a spinner bait in baby bass color or a watermelon red fluke for bass. In the back for bream and crappie, my best bait was a smaller jig tipped with a piece of cold worm. I think my best color was a tri colored jig with a orange top, purple or blue body and a chrt. tail. I did try the 2" jigs that I catch on Bundicks with but they didn't want anything to do with the larger jigs. There should be plenty of goggle eye in there right now. My cousin went last saturday and caught about 30 goggle eyes and one nice crappie. Hope this helps some and let us know how you do. There should be other people in there today, even though it is a weekday, it is a friday! I may go tomorrow if the rain and winds let me!

Nope I'm not planning to go over there as it's real far for me. From what I see on the permit you can't fish Willow Lake. I used to fish nets in there and it had beautiful water.
I went to Miami that's accessed on Hwy 82 at the Superior canal West of Pecan Island. Really do see that type of marsh as different than what I feel like I know how to fish. Got to learn something different. Don't keep any fish except crappie.
Had a good time but only three fish and I let em go. Can't remember ever fishing that much wind, but stayed with it until noon. Caught on blue/white triple tail tight line. Hair jig under cork wouldn't work for me. Talked to a couple of other folks and they were doing about the same. The water is real high, but the area is beautiful. No trash anywhere. That's what you would expect in a gated community. The wind on the South side of Hwy 82 has the tide way up. I was surprised to see very few gators. Did see 2 dead on the road though.

thanks for the report...does the south wind bring the water up also?
Strong like it is the water can at times flow North in the Mermentau. Grand and White lake act like pumps when it blows. I've been sheltered in a canal off of White Lake (the lake) and seen a passing thunderstorm move the water hard in and then out of the canal. It for sure keeps Vermilion Bay with a high tide so the locks can't get rid of the water inside. If you look at the river gage for Mermentau you can see the effect sometime. Big south wind during day and it rises then when calm at night it goes down. The graph can look like a tide chart for the Bay for a time.
