Romans 6:23
Picked up two rods. Got the full fishing lesson and his area maps as a bonus, did learn a few things from him.
I really like the BandM 12' Graphite rods. They fit nicely in my rod holder. If you do like the rods that have the reel on the end of the handle make sure your spider rig setup can accommodate that (the Bee Ready cannot). I thought about going for the BandM West Point at Academy but after some very hard thought I decided to pay a little extra so all my poles will look the same...the fish notice stuff like this.
I picked up some more rods at Academy this weekend for $39.99 each but Amazon has them for $42 (if you are a prime member then free 2 day shipping).
Just wanted to follow upon this old thread. I took the advice that some of you gave me and stopped by JB Salters shop on my way to Alexandria for a business meeting. We talked for about 45 minutes and I think JB would have talked to me all day if I could have stayed! He is a wealth of information and is more than willing to share it with you. The things he can do with a jig pole are amazing! He took the time to show me how to use the jig pole, bait to use, and even gave me some information about where to fish. I ended up buying two jiggin poles, 1 for me and 1 for a buddy. I am thinking about taking the leisure course that he offers at LSU. If you fish with a jig pole, you owe it to yourself to go talk with him, just plan on staying a while! He is a true Louisiana treasure and an excellent fisherman. It will be a sad day when he goes to fish that big swamp on the other side.
Grizzly Jig Co. has a pretty good selection and price to choose from. Personally I have several B&M Buck's Ultimate ad have had them for a good many years with no problems at all. The last one I bought was Buck's Gold Jig Pole and I like it, but the Ultimate has a lot more backbone. Also the Ultimate sells for almost $90 at other places where at Grizzly Jig it's like $69.95. Here is a link to all their rods.

There is an older fella in West lake La by the name of J.D. Courtney that not only make jigging poles, but jigs. He is a wealth of information and I consider his pole by far the best for "dipping" in shallower water. He will make you what you want, but his pole are 8.5 feet. The line runs through the blank. there are no eyes on it. It is the lightest strongest rod and if you get up in amongst the fish, you'll love the fact that there are no eyes on it. His jigs are just as good too.
Well, after reading this thread about Mr. Salter's jig poles, I gave him a call and ordered two of them....one for me and one for the wife That man sure can talk fast! I enjoyed my talk with him, but he sure did put a lot of effort into trying to sell me some other stuff.
Barry, I passed on most of his kits and other stuff too. Since I pour my own jigs, I can make a kit very similar to what he sells. I bought a few of what he calls bream jig heads because I have never seen any like that and a package of the weed guards. When you get your pole, it should have JB's favorite jig, red head, black and green body. My plan is to replicate that jig as best I can. I also want to change bodies as necessary. While JB swears by those colors, and I'm sure that works great for him, I like trying to listen to the fish and allow them to tell me what they want, rather than trying to force feed them my favorite lure. Again, if you find yourself close to his shop, I would recommend stopping by. After just a few minutes of instruction, I was able to flip the jig out about 25 feet, something I would have thought I was not possible.
My first Graphite pole was a combo with an underspin reel , Bought in a small Tackle shop in Camden Ark. To go Fishing with my brother and his wife, The reel was spooled with 4 lb test. THE Graphite was so sensitive I was able to catch more Crappie than both of them. When A 11 Lb Catfish took my Jig , It was Like Tarpon Fishing. Bro stopped Making Fun of my 11 ft rod. I now Own Two Graphites and 80% of my Fish are caughton them. When the fish are taking it light Fiberglass Just cant compare'
