went out to taylorsville today i think this is trip 4 spider rigging, anyway i got my first hit but i had a lot of trouble trying to get ahold of fish at the end of 16' pole and he got away lol. i'm still trying but getting a bit frustrated this is not as easy as it looks.btw water 53degree f water is high but no debris floating lots of blow downs but they are against the banks settlers trace ramp is barely showing its not easy but can be done

keep the drag on reel set light enough so you can strip line. raise fish up out of water, strip line and swing fish back to you.

I started with 12 footers a couple years ago. Have 6 14 footers as well now. There's no way I could have started with 16's. 4 is usually the most I ever run by myself anyway. It's too easy to miss a bite if you're looking at your other poles. It's hard. I tell people at work that I work way harder fishing than I actually do at work. They laugh but I'm serious. It takes a lot of concentration and coordination. Like was mentioned previously, run your drag light enough that you can strip line from the reel. That is, if you're fishing shallower than the length of your poles. You may try using 2 poles then 3 then 4. It takes some time to get it down pat. Just keep at it. A springtime trip to green river will break you in the right way!
I take it you have spinning reels on those 16' Southerns ?? You might consider changing them out for some baitcast reels w/thumb bars ... then you can simply push the thumb bar and let your thumb control the line spool and let the fish down to the level where you can swing it to you or to a net.

Spider rigging with any length of pole is tough due to the submerged timber. We have had 8 poles hung up all at the same time fishing Taylorsville.
