I am going to Kentucky Lake for the first time. We are going the last week in March, I am pulling the camper and the daughter is pulling the boat. I am looking for suggestions/recommendations on what campground to stay at.
Canal Campground is nice, it's on the northern end of the LBL. On down a few miles in the LBL is Hillman Ferry Campground. It's a big area that sits right on Ky lake. Canal sits on Lake Barkley and the canal but you can easily fish both lakes from there.
I live right here next to Eureka Campground which is next to Barkley Dam. It's the prettiest campground down here, IMO. Problem is, it doesn't open until the end of April. I'm from Clark County, btw.
There's a big campground over in Gilbertsville, too. It sits up stream a little from Ky dam.
You might want to also consider Barkley State Park as an option. It's a real nice campground and is easy to trailer to many spots on both Barkley and Kentucky from there. The nice thing is that from there you can easily trailer up the trace in LBL and access many of the nice coves on the eastern side of Kentucky lake.
Enjoy yourselves and be safe.
It's best if you figure out what section of the lake your going to fish the most and stay close to there. I have went at times and drove to different launch sites miles and miles apart to try and find fish or just as an adventure. That's one way to do it...but you will eat up a lot of time doing that. And some of the roads to the launches on the LBL are long and some of the ramps aren't the best . I have driven from the West side to the East side many times but it does eat up time. If you can beach or slip your boat it works out good when you just want to go out for an hour or two.So being in a major bay or creek arm that's pretty good fishing helps that....also if the weather gets rough or severe weather threatens you can go out and stay close and still fish. You don't want to get caught way out and down or up the creek as they say....especially if you don't have something that will handle rough and I mean scary at times water. I have had guy's white knuckled and speechless out in a storm or high wind...including myself. Some of the smaller bays can be good and less crowded if you get in the right one.
Oh yeah sometimes its nice to be close to a good marina with all the possibles you'll need. And maybe a hot pizza once in a while LOL.
Have fun...be safe.
