    Default Today's Catch (Part 1)...

What a misleading title... kinda makes it sound like I had a "grand slam" of a day! Well, it was more of a "two strikes" against me and a canceled game due to time...

I started a wee bit later than I had hoped and when I approached the ramp to launch, my gut told me that I probably should have launched on the other side of the lake where I could have been sheltered from some of the wind in the coves. But my heart was wanting to try out a particular area that I have never fished before even though it would be a lot more difficult against the open wind.

After being blown around and tossed to and fro, I began to notice some white caps on the water. Not a lot, but enough for a kayaker to take notice. As I drifted further and further from the launch ramp, I began to wonder how difficult it would be to paddle back against the wind and white caps. It became more and more difficult just to maintain the proper kayak orientation to prevent a roll over. That was it... Chalk it up as a learning experience... I'm heading back, or at least attempting to head back. By that time, it was all hands on deck, I didn't even take the few seconds to reel in the crank baits that I was trolling... I just wanted to get back to the ramp!

The journey back was indeed just as difficult as I had thought it might be, I just didn't take into consideration of having to attack to waves head on even though it wasn't a straight line back to the ramp. I paced myself since I knew that it would take some time to get back and I knew that I had to maintain a constant pace or run the risk of going backwards. Thankfully I never regressed backwards, but there were a few brief times that my GPS failed to show forward speed, but most times I was able to creep at a .58 to 1.38 mph. I often looked at a landmark on the shore just to make sure I was advancing because I often felt like a hamster on an exercising wheel. Lots of effort but no forward movement!

I was soaked from head to toe. Some of it was from the waves, other from the intense paddling and perhaps some of it old fashioned sweat! I eventually made it back, and fortunately for me, I was wearing all cotton. :-) Extremely comfortable, that is until you get it wet! I know that I must have looked like a "Hip-Hop Wanta-Be" with my britches sagging low form all that water they soaked up. But being the gentleman that I aspire to be, I kept a constant up-ward tug to maintain any semblance that I didn't just get kicked out of a homeless shelter...

    Today's Catch (Part 2)

By the time I got all my gear loaded up, I flopped my wet self into my truck and thought I would just head home. I knew it would take me forever to drive around the lake for a suitable launching site and I really needed to get back home around noon. But on my way back home, temptation got the best of me and I thought that I would try another spot that I have never tried before. Just south of the spill-way, was a river that was shielded completely from the wind and tsunami waves (pretty dramatic don't ya think... just wanted to see if you are paying attention!). I both saw and heard splashing and jumping in the water, so I regained a bit of confidence that I might be able to catch something. A crappie would be wonderful, but at this stage of the game, even the slime of a catfish would have been an encouragement (pretend I didn't even say that). After a few miles down stream... Fish On! Yahoo! Fish On! I heard it jump out of the water behind me, I quickly grabbed my rod and reel and reeled, reeled and reeled. The fish made a run towards me and under the kayak, I wrangled it back to the left side of the boat when all of a sudden, that rascal went airborne again! Except this time I got a close glimpse of what it was... A Stinking Gar!... A Stinking Gar!... That Scally-Wag almost jumped into the boat!

The thought of sharing my kayak with an alligator gar with a thyroid problem didn't seem like a worthy pursuit at the time. Most times I would just cut my line to disenfranchise the little monsters, but not this time! This toothy little sea monster had a hold of one of my Bandit Crank Baits. If I could just keep him from shredding the line, I might, just maybe get my Bandit back.

The gar underwent "A Series of Unfortunate Events"! It took a lick'n, but kept on tick'n! I'll just leave it at that! I still felt unsafe working around the snout of that bugger (no pun intended), and the mucky river banks didn't offer a firm enough platform for me to perform emergency surgery to remove the embedded Bandit. I reeled my other Bandit in so I wouldn't potentially loose another and headed back up stream to the concrete ramp where I could perform the required delicate surgery that fate would call on me to perform. I held it's head up high so it wouldn't flip-flop around as much and run the risk of cutting the line, because a cut line meant bye-bye Bandit, and I didn't even want to think about that!

After days and days of paddling upstream (OK, Ok, that was a slight exaggeration), I made it my intended destination. I launched the dental-wonder up on the shore and took the necessary implements for the crude yet delicate surgery that would soon transpire....

Long, long story short... The surgery was successful! The Bandit Crank Bait was recovered and returned to it's rightful location non-the-worse for the trouble. And for those PETA activists, the gar made it through the surgery and was recovering in ICU. I did not want to disturb "Chomps" while he was resting, because he looked really peaceful like and motionless as he laid on his back, belly up resting up for another day!

I didn't have any available recipes for Alligator Gar so I didn't eat him... Maybe next time, that is if you come along... I'll bring along some "Gar-Lick Toast" and we'll have us a good eat'n!

Hope you enjoyed the morning as much as I did and thank you for reading the Fiction & Fact from FlyBye's Almanac!

And a couple of days later the soreness will be gone and you will be ready for more action. Great story regardless of the real facts. LOL
