The ticket this time of year, or what it has seemed to be for myself in Kansas, PA, and Ohio has been to go back over typical spawning areas and find the cover, they will be holding tight to it in as little as 8 inches of water. Movement seems to turn them off, but a nice long "noodle" rod is not needed but helps greatly. I've done this at Marion, KDOT West, and Eldorado here in Kansas, and even Milton, Mosquito, and the Ashtabula river in Ohio, it seems to be the way that I can catch crappie in the early fall without a boat and consistantly. I'm no expert and a lot of my fishing is trial and error but I do keep notes, they include things like water temp, depth, clarity, and patterns and let me tell you, 55-65 water and shallow cover calls for small jigs and tight SHALLOW cover in my book, every single day that I can get out there I will try this first before anything else. Hope that helped! Now get out there and hook a hog!
