    Default cranking/trolling help

i just bought four 14' b&m pro trolling rods and 4 shakespear trollig reels with line counters. i fish central indiana most of the time. i have been reading up on trolling and cranking but need help.

i have a millenium spider rigging stand up front and used that to push picos and b&m minnow rigs for my first time out.

    my questions:
    1. where can i find the trolling chart to know my depths?
    2. do i need to calibrate my reels to ensure correct line discharge?
    3. when trolling cranks at .8 to 1.5 mph do i need to add weights to help with depth? if so how much?

i have read many posts and hate to repeat, but i am lost. can someone point me to a few good resources?

    thanks, Joe

If you're using large weights to push cranks or jigs and keep your line at a 45 degree angle, just multiply the depth you want your bait to run X 1.414 and run out that much line.

If you are pulling cranks you will not utilize weights. You regulate the depth by length of line out only. If you are pushing cranks then you are utilizing weights and length of line out. The weights shortens the length of line out. Of course various boat speed effects each method. You might decide on obtaining the skill levels on one technique then work on the skill set of the other.

Calibrating the reels is viewed with merit by the don’t need to and the need to camps. Both views and appliance produce fish. I’m in the need to camp.

After all the reading, nothing beats time on the water. It is a very enjoyable method of fishing.

I fill the spool first. Then I take a tape and measure out 100 ft. I trip the lever making sure the counter is zeroed out and pull the line out to the end of the 100 ft. I check the line counter for the reading. If it reads 99-101 I’m happy. More than that I either add or subtract line. If it reads over 100; you have to add line. If it reads less than 100, you have to subtract line. After add or subtract line, rezero counter and pull line back out to 100 feet and ck counter. This works for me but I’m sure there are other ways.

On my reels usually 15-16 foot of line will make the clicker turn one numerical. These holds turn for a couple numerical but if you are off a bunch the ratio will change due to diameter size changing on spool.

i just vary wired weights and line out, till i get hits. i always vary speed either with boat steering, big rod sweeps, or just the motor. i guess at speed to, since i have no speedometer. they really seem to love the stop and then tear off trick. get a lot of hits after going over a school and doing that. i troll faster than most people do also.

    great info posted cevans

Guys do you're selves a favor and go to the Mississippi Board and read the sticky Crankbaits 101. It may take you a few days to read sense it is 161 pages that will answer all your questions and keep you from making some mistakes. As far as calabrating line counter reels there is a welth of knowledge on Utube on this. After gaining all this new knowledge time on the water is the best teacher, If yuo have a friend or see someone else pulling cranks talk to them or higher a guide that specialize in pulling cranks. Good luck and I warn you now it is fun and addictive.
