if its to be just a tackle box gun, I think you will be ok. If a gun is to be for self defense, I put my life in Glock's hands. I carry a G20, 10MM in fall a winter months. G26, 9MM in warmer months. As stated above, by you an IWB holder, you will forget you are toting the thing once you find your sweet spot.

    Good luck on your purchase

Kahr Came out with their "full size" handgun in their value line this summer. Check out the CT9, CT40 or CT 45. I picked up a brand new CT9 for $281 shipped to my FFL from Bud's Guns, plus they are running a free mag promotion this summer! It makes a very nice truck gun and hasn't skipped a beat with a FTF or FTE with over 400 rounds down range.

i have a hi point in the 380 i take in the boat with me never had to use it thank god. i do take it and run a mag or 2 ever now and then and never had it jam on me i guess for $159 new in the box with holster and exter mag its been a good auto loader for the money. i think the hi point gets a bad rap becaues they are so cheap but they are the only one that has a life time warntey and it will even carry over to to second owenr if you sell it. they keep the cost down becaues they make them as plane and simple as posable. my buddy has a smith and wesson 380 and it shoot just as good as his will all day long

well lots of looking feeling and firing went on since i asked this question. i settled on a m shield in 40sw. about 300 rds through it now and im happy as can be. it has taken the place of the 586 as my carry gun. with the iwb holster its like nothing is even there. not one malfunction yet. critical duty rds for the first 4 then fmj in the rest of the mag. i feel just as safe with this little gun as with my 586(at 50ft or less). and @ 380 bucks out the door you cant go wrong.

thanks for all the input guys

If it was me, I would have all magazine that I carried for the weapon loaded with Critical duty rounds just to be safe. You never know when you will have multiple threats and ones marksmanship generally fades drastically when in a critical shoot instance. I would be cautious of the FMJ due to the fact that it can penetrate tissue and the body easily thus causing less damage to the threat and increasing your chance of an over penetration and the possibilities of hitting a friendly.

I was going to recommend the shield. Great gun, great accuracy. My dad purchased a 9mm and it was awesome accurate.

X2 what bobo said. Load the entire mag from start to finish with the same ammo. If you want to have a mag with plinking rounds, pickup a couple. They are pretty cheap. My entire family carries the same firearm. No mater what car boat, truck, ATV you get into, there is always a mag in there someplace.

Trusting your life to something is no joke. Being a marksmanship instructor for years taught me that it is only good if you can get at it and use it properly and effectively. To be a carry gun of mine it has to function in any condition, and I have to be able to function it in any condition.

You will like the gun. I've got one, plus a Kahr (like others mentioned) plus a glock (like others mentioned) plus a colt 1911... they all have their place. Single stack, compact are the way to go in my opinion as a carry gun. The reason being is that you are more apt to carry it because it is comfortable. A big strong gun that is fun to shoot and holds lots of rounds is great right up until you don't carry it every day because it is a hassle, it is not comfortable.... etc

I am a fan of a wheel gun while outdoors. Mine is a stainless Tarus 357. It is not an auto loader. But if neglected and left in the boat or tackle box it will always fire. Another plus side is that you can choose to shoot 357 or 38 special as you see fit for the task at hand. As a firearms instructor I have use 148 was cutters over a light load to introduce shooters to a larger handgun. Then you can work your way up to full house 357 rounds. It serves me well through its versatility. I own auto loaders and I love my Number and Springfield 1911's.

Remember these words to heart. " I kept shooting until I no longer felt threatened, and I would like to press charges officer." After that shut up and contact a lawyer to do your talking for you. You will be under a stress like you have never experienced, time will move at warp speed yet not move at all. You really do not need to be getting interviewed after a Critical Stress Incendent until several days later. You will notice that LEO's do not have to turn in the report that night. They have a few days to gather their thoughts.

The above paragraph is if you ever have to use your carry weapon.
