Default Great Day on Oconee 12/3/15 Report

Kowboy and I went to Oconee today. Kowboy pushed 8 rods out of the front and also fished 4 of my long line rods that were in the front rod holders. I long lined 6 rods out the back. We started fishing at 7:30 and quit at 3:30. We kept 54 nice fish. I would estimate that 3/4 of the fish we kept were 12 inches or better and we both caught a couple of 14 inchers. The bite was steady all day and the popsicle curly tail () was the best producer early. It was a cloudy, cool day and the water temperature was 57.7. We caught most of the fish in 23-28 FOW trolling at .8-1.0. There was very little boat traffic. I did see one boat and that joker had a long net sticking up in his boat. I got as close to him as I could and started fishing. I take my own advice. Never seen him before. Just kidding.

SLABPROWLER, I am sure the fish were not that deep. Probably suspended twelve to fourteen feet deep based on the water temp in the post. JUST GUESSING THOUGH??

Prowler I'm new to long lining so I'm rigged like others on this forum told me they rig. I use a 1/16 oz jig head and mostly 2 inch curly tails. About 12 inches above the jig head I have a 1/16 oz split shot. If I'm fishing around timber my casts are 40-50 feet (that is an estimate). If I am fishing a clean bottom, and 20-25 FOW, I cast the line as far as I can. I wish I could tell you how deep the jigs are but I can't. I'm estimating that they run between 8-12 feet. I have read a lot on long line trolling and everyone has their opinion. It is not an exact science. Some say a 1/16 oz jig cast out 50 feet will get down about 8-12 feet at around .8 mph. I've tried that and I am not saying it is incorrect but I'm saying it doesn't work for me. I hope EARL, Jody, Jonathan and others will comment on this. Also, the SC forum has a section on long lining. It is a good read. The past few days Lake Oconee has been really good. I post my 3 fish days as well as my good days. In fact, I have many more of the single digit days than days like yesterday and Monday. I still haven't got on the water and determined how deep I'm running at various speeds and depths but I need to do that.
