boat trailer tire advice

i called the tire shop yesterday to get a price on new trailer tires and he said $65 a piece and up, according to what brand. he also said they were passenger car tires. what's the differance in trailer tires and car tires? i saw some at walmart for $35, same size. will these work or should i try and find some trailer tires? i've got Titan tires, st 155 80 r13, on the trailer now.

skintback,,some people use car tires on boat trailers BUT,, I do not... There is a difference,,,the side walls are stronger on trailer tires and they are rated for heavier weight per tire..and higher inflation pressures..ST printed on the tire = special trailer,,,I was told this by a friend that owns a tire store,,if I rememder correct..

I guess it depends on how much weight the trailer carries and some one else may chime in and correct me if I am wrong.. captin

be careful, there was a thread around here somewhere about tire makes/models/age.. what I recalled is the walmart tires are cheap quality and you want to look at the DOT code which is the date and get the newest ones.

I do not have a large boat so I buy my replacement tires and rim at Northern Hydrolics. You can order through their mail order. I buy mine in Macon, GA.

i use car tires they last longer and as far as weight i don`t think a boat is heavier than a car some of the bigger boats are heavier but the take a bigger tire than my boat that has a 13 tire . the side walls are softer on a car mainley for the softer ride .the wear rate on a boat tire is less. softer rubber . you never wear a traylor tire out if it is lined up right .
my pontoon has 13 on it . need something heavier but can`t go higher just wider . they last about 500 miles .would put car tires on it if i could some low enough to clear the toons.

I went to Harbor Freight last year looking for some new tires and they had some at a really good price, i took em home only to find after opening the box they came in that they were only to be used for a spare tire , it said not to be used over 60 mph.

Took em back pissed because i had originally told the guy what they were going to be used for . I went to Walmart and been using them all summer with no problems and still in great shape after many miles.

my tires still have good tread left but the sidewalls are cracking pretty bad. i'm almost certain they are the original tires and the trailer is a 98 model. i looked on the titan website and the same tires i have now would be $180+ with shipping. i don't know of anyone locally that has these tires. i could check dublin marine they may have some.

Skintback it is best to buy the tires and new wheels already mounted from Tractor Supply, Northern Tool in Macon, Lowes etc. Check their prices and do the math, it ain't but just a little more money than buying straight tires only and a whole lot less hassle. Get load range B for a light boat or C for the heavier boats.

$180.00 is very HI> I just purchased 2 GoodYears for $300.00. I thought that was out of sight. There is a farm equipment place in Tifton that sells tires mounted on new wheels very reasonable.
